FIX SHOULDER PAIN FAST!
Shoulder pain can happen to many people for many different reasons, and can be a very frustrating condition to deal with, as the shoulder girdle is responsible for so many movements. It is the most complex joint in the body, as it requires the most mobility (range of movement- the ability to swing your arm all the way around!), whilst maintaining stability (to make sure it doesn’t ‘pop’ out).
A group of muscles called your ‘rotator cuff’ muscles hold your humerus (arm) onto your scapula (shoulder blade). They are specially placed tendons that start from your shoulder blade and go over the head of the shoulder to hold everything in place, making sure the head of your shoulder doesn’t move during any movement and rotation.
CAUSES OF SHOULDER PAIN
There are few main causes of shoulder pain, which we will discuss below.
- AC joint injury- one that many contact sports athletes endure.
- Rotator cuff muscles and tendon strains or tendinopathy- acute injuries include muscle strains and partial or complete tendon tears. Overuse injuries include tendinopathies of the rotator cuff tendons. Many people presenting with these sorts of conditions have pain and difficulty with overhead activities.
- Shoulder instability- pain resulting from instability can come from the anterior, posterior or superior shoulder capsule and labrum and can be either from hypermobility of the ligaments, or can be caused by poor motor control (dynamic instability).
- Shoulder stiffness- can arise secondary from trauma, or spontaneously in middle age- a condition termed “frozen shoulder”.
WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT SHOULDER PAIN?
Get into your Myolab practitioner, at either our Myolab South Melbourne or Myolab Brunswick East locations to get your shoulder pain correctly identified. This will save you a lot of time and effort in the long run. A correct treatment and management plan can then be identified.
Rotator cuff ‘Impingement’ is a clinical sign, and can be caused by the above causes, and therefore, we want to avoid this!
Whatever the case, the impingement you have been experiencing will be causing the tendons to become weaker, and pain to be increasing, so it’s important to begin strengthening the area.
Your treatment regime will include hands on treatment and techniques as well as a specifically structured functional rehab program to ensure both elements are being done together to get the best treatment outcomes for your shoulder.
